SaaS Backup – a shared responsibility

SaaS backup and data protection

This year, over 78% of businesses will rely completely on SaaS (Software as a Service) applications. However, there is a common misconception that the SaaS provider is responsible for backing up this data. This, in fact is not true.

A direct quote from Microsoft:

We strive to keep the Services up and running; however, all online services suffer occasional disruptions and outages, and Microsoft is not liable for any disruption or loss you may suffer as a result. In the event of an outage, you may not be able to retrieve Your Content or Data that you have stored. We recommend that you regularly backup Your Content and Data that you store on the Services or store using Third-Party Apps and Services.

SaaS responsibility from the provider is:

  • Physical infrastructure
  • Apps and operating systems
  • Network controls

That’s pretty much it, you as an organisation has a responsibility to ensure that the infrastructure you use to utilise your cloud applications is up to date. Also, the business processes you use to ensure that accounts are secure and safe from hackers and malicious attack.
