IT Consulting – A changing environment

My first dabble in IT was way back in 1988 when I got a job assembling PCs for a company that supplied schools and government agencies Australia wide. Since then, over the last 30 years, I have seen Information Technology change and evolve into what it is today.  I’m happy to say that I have evolved along with it so I can confidently provide the most up-to-date IT Consulting services to my clients.

SKAI computer systems are long gone, the DOS operating system is in the dustbin of history and programming your BIOS doesn’t require a manual anymore.

I grew up in the days of bulletin boards, the ancient precursor to the Social Media platforms we have today. I had my first Internet connection at home in 1995. Who remembers the ping of the dial-up connection and the incremental downloading of images onto your browser?

DOS, Windows for Workgroups, Windows 95, Windows NT and Windows 2000 operating systems. I’ve worked on them all and seen Mac and PC platforms get better and better over time.

I have built servers of all types: mail servers, file Servers and print servers and when anything went wrong with them, I would have to drive to their location to fix them on-site.

Y2K saw an IT Consulting business boom, and I remember patching computers in 1999 like a madman. We will never know how effective the work we did was. We hoped we were helping.

IT Consulting in the future

IT Consulting is far less complicated these days, and with the advent of cloud computing, business no longer requires expensive infrastructure in offices. As an IT provider, this eliminated a lot of the worry where security updates and data backups were concerned. Of course, these things will always remain a concern, but the days of remembering to change the backup tape are long gone.

Automation is the key, integrating your cloud systems to talk to each other and utilising SaaS (Software as a Service) applications like Office365, Xero or Asana make these tasks easy.

I’ve learnt plenty in my thirty-year career from building computers to developing websites and even graphic design. If it is a digital product, chances are I’ve used it or fixed it.

So, this is where IT Consulting has changed.  IT now covers all aspects of computing, and any IT supplier who wants to stay ahead of the curve must have expertise in all aspects of digital technologies.
